This week, we’re taking a deep dive into the meaning behind GOT7 member and soloist Jay B’s latest release, ‘Rocking Chair’. This is definitely a sonic deviation from Jay B’s usual sound and a refreshing change in subject as well. Showcasing her golden vocals that are at the forefront of the piece, unbroken by heavy accompaniment, ‘Rocking Chair’ is genuine, meaningful and heartfelt.

Let’s take a look at what the lyrics to ‘Rocking Chair’ mean!

Today was also difficult when I opened my eyes / Because of the lack of sleep last night, time that never arrives / Dry hair / I didn’t even have time to have breakfast / After a brief exchange in a cafe with a long line / After a brief conversation / You’re stuck staring at the screen with your head down

The first verse paints a blue picture of melancholy and depression, something that is a stark reality for countless people this is addressed to. It’s also something the artist himself has struggled with and has been quite open about. In an age where mental health is given increasing priority but continues to be stigmatized at the same time, Jay B’s music comes as a beacon of hope for visibility, understanding and acceptance.

Jay B speaks directly to the silent sufferer, for whom time runs too fast or too slow. Something as seemingly simple as waking up in the morning, showering and having breakfast before heading out becomes unimaginably difficult. Jay B wants them to know they are seen and heard.

If you feel a little lonely / Come to me as you are and sit / Lean comfortably and rest against me / It’s okay if you fall asleep / If you’re having a tiring day / I’ll put a blanket around you / And I will become your rocking chair

In a chorus that is the musical embodiment of a true rocking chair, as soothing and comforting as one, Jay B opens his arms wide so we can rest. He calls out to his hearers, asking them to lean on him, his voice, his words, and find refuge in them. He encourages iGOT7 to be themselves, come as they are and stay awhile until the world looks like a better place, even if just a little bit.

You feel small / Because the sunset outside your window is beautiful, but you have nowhere to go / When the sounds of people and the busy streets calm down / I still feel alone / I seem to have gotten used to the ‘ ‘close’ button / Got a lot more worn out than the ‘open’ button

With this verse, Jay B spills his vulnerability, which inadvertently allows him to connect with his listeners even more intimately. Rather than being a one-way conversation, Jay B shares and listens, comforts and allows himself to be comforted. He makes sure you know he needs you as much as you need him, and nothing is more precious than a relationship like that.

There’s something bothering you that you can’t sleep / I’ll stay by your side until you fall asleep / Lean on me and like now, don’t worry / I want to be a comfort to you

Finally, with the bridge, Jay B declares once and for all that his artistic manifesto is simply to be there for you when you need him most. He understands that pain doesn’t have to be great or tragic by society’s standards to be recognized. Even if it’s something seemingly insignificant like not being able to sleep, Jay B wants you to know that it’s valid. This is the music that matters. This is life-changing art, and Jay B has taken it upon himself to make sure it gets to us.
