Before we start. Don’t get us wrong.
Top leads always have a special place in our hearts. Viewers see their story grow and their characters develop throughout the drama. We laugh with them, cry with them, and rejoice in their happiness. But there’s something about some K-Drama lead couples that makes them irresistible.
These couples add more color and drama to the show. With unparalleled fiery chemistry, they really give the leads some tough competition. Kpopmap has collected quite a few names from the K-Dramas list (over the past few years) for the best second leads, and we’re sure you’ll 100% agree.
To find out who they are, read on! Here are the top 4 second-leading couples who have the top couple some tough competition.
This article contains spoilers.
The first to join the list are none other than our “Business Proposal” couple. It’s fair to say that they’ve taken over the fandom almost as much as the main leadership.
While the main couple had a hard time accepting their feelings, this couple fell in love with ‘love at first sight’. As soon as they bumped into each other, they knew they were destined. They went through the whole cinematic experience of love, with the glowing halo behind it and the flowers.
YeongSeo was quick to act on his feelings. She was the first to make her move and confessed, but SungHoon had a different story. He knew her past and how she should relate to her boss, Kang TaeMoo (Ahn HyoSeop). This created complications for both of them. SungHoon tried to draw the line and YeongSeo mocked him about it. But how could she keep her distance when they really were meant to be? In fact, fate even made them neighbors!
As mentioned earlier, this couple was much faster than the main couple. Fans were treated to a steamy kissing scene even before the protagonists started to confess. Despite this, fans adored this couple. They felt like a break in tension that the main couple gave. While we were desperately looking forward to them coming together. This couple has given us something to root for.
Although fans have seen Ahn HyoSeop and Kim SeJeong’s reunion in “Office Romance Recipe”, they are desperately waiting for these two to appear on screen together again.
2. Kang BiChwi (Jo EunJi) from “Strangers Again” and Kwon SiWook (Lee JaeWon I)
Many second couples even act as voices on certain issues. BiChwi and SiWook are one of them. The main couple, Oh HaRa (it’s SoRa) and Gu EunBeom (Jang Seung Jo), were a divorced couple who were brought together by fate. BiChwi was one of Oh HaRa’s closest friends, and while we wouldn’t classify Kwon SiWook as a close ally, he was closer to EunBeom than the others.
The couple defined the concept of ‘opposites attract’. While BiChwi had strong modern feminist views, SiWook was more of a traditional thinker. BiChwi was bold and unencumbered by anything. Once she decided on something, she certainly got it anyway. Whereas SiWook had a more shy side. After the two spent a drunken night together, BiChwi wasn’t shy about hiding it, while SiWook was beyond confused.
This odd balance makes the couple that much more interesting, and after they spend more time together, we see them grow and shape their views. They fight over gender roles and their stereotypes in a lighthearted and comical way, but they certainly draw our attention to it. In this way, we see the two often stealing the spotlight from the protagonists.
Perhaps a couple that attracted many viewers to watch the drama more than the main couple. Tak DongKyung (Park BoYoung) and Myul Mang (Seo InGuk), were lost in agony, but JiNa and JooIk’s story was completely different. There was no supernatural element to it and their story had a lot of ups and downs.
JiNa was a writer stuck in a loop. After her first heartbreak, she couldn’t move on. Her stories became quite predictable because they all had the same type of male lead. JooIk wanted to change that. He became her editor and encouraged her to move on and write more variety.
The charismatic JooIk and the clumsy JiNa turned out to be an extremely adorable couple and we held our breath for them.
4. Choi SooYeon (Ha YoonKyung) from “Lawyer Extraordinary Woo” and Kwon MinWoo (Joo JungHyuk)
Perhaps the most unpredictable couple. We often know who the second leads are right away, and while we initially see them as a potential match, viewers lose that feeling halfway through.
SooYeon was the perfect girl. She was genial, beautiful, confident and kind. She came from a solid background, as her father was a judge. Whereas MinWoo fought alone and that made him competitive and insecure. He started targeting YoungWoo (Park EunBin), therefore, the public turned against him.
SooYeon and MinWoo were always on each other’s necks and would fight at every possible opportunity. Consequently, their feelings not only confused the audience, but also themselves! SooYeon tried to deny it, but they were really fated. And honestly, after MinWoo’s character grew, we all rooted for the two.
The second main couples act as a bonus in the drama, whether it’s an addition in romance, comedy or drama. They add their own colors and viewers love it. What is your second favorite K-Drama couple that has given the leads some tough competition?
